ORIGINS
I grew up in a small Ohio town and I rode the school bus from 1st through 12th grades. My bus ride always included a country road on which every school day we saw a one-room brick school house. (SW corner of Stine Rd and Enon-Xenia Pike). As the years went by I watched this wonderful, familiar friend fall apart. After I married the school really began to deteriorate. Every time we visited the area I would want to take a photo of the school but never did. Finally, when we went specifically for the task, the school was gone. It was a huge loss for me and, since that time, whenever we pass a one-room school it is a joy to stop to take a picture or two. Thus, our collection here and the blog with schools in other states. Locust Grove #?, Unknown School 2
About 5 miles west of Fairfield on U.S. 34 is county road V63/Packwood Rd, which goes northbound. About 1/2 mile north of U.S. 34 is the junction of a road; eastbound the road is 200th St but westbound it is 197th Blvd. This school is located on the NW corner of this intersection. Now used for grain storage.
This photo is of the back/north side of the school, photographed from V63.
This one is photographed from the corner of 197th Blvd.
The last two shots are taken from 197th Blvd.

Locust Grove #?, Unknown School 1
From U.S. 34 just west of Fairfield, turn north on H33, which will then bend northwest. From U.S. 34 proceed 7 miles on H33 to the junction of V63. About 300’ SW of that junction is a house which was converted from a 2-room school. This school may also be reached by proceeding north on V63 from U.S.34; I forgot to get the exact distance, but I estimate about 3 miles.
This first shot is of the back, or northwest side of the school, seen from H33. Signs around the lot were posted "No Trespassing," so I did not attempt to get a clear shot by moving closer.
This next photo was taken from east of the house while on V63.

Graham #5, Summit School
Proceed north of Iowa City on State Highway 1 for about 1 mile north of I-80, to Rapid Creek Road, and turn east. About 4 miles NE on this road it will dead-end at 280th St. The school will be on the north side of 280th just east of this intersection, fire number 5242. My 1912 map makes it appear to be sitting about 1,000 to 1,500 feet east of this position, but the map is not always that accurate, so this may or may not be the original location. It has been turned into a machine shed.

Graham #7, Oasis School
Proceed east of Iowa City on Herbert Hoover Highway, three miles to Oasis Rd, then turn north. About 2.25 miles you will come to the small hamlet of Oasis, and this school is on the south side of town on the west side of the road, converted into a garage.

Unknown School, SE of Brooklyn
We discovered this school while driving on Interstate 80, but during the summertime there is much foliage covering it from the highway. We looked on a map to see how to find this school, and the best way is to use exit 197 off of I-80, and take the first road south of the highway, eastbound. This road is 415th St/County Highway F39. Continue to 200th St, were 415th ends, but F39 turns south. There is a trace of 415th continuing eastbound, all overgrown and part of the farm. The school has been moved from an unknown location and sits on the trace of 415th a couple hundred feet east of 200th St. It is being used as a machine shed, with a garage door opening at the original front, which now faces south.
Photographed 12/17/11
These last two photos were photographed on 11/3/12 from the north side of I-80. They show the back side of the building and the addition on its east side.

Penn #3, Dutch/Union School, North Liberty
On the south side of town, on Forevergreen Road. Proceed east of Highway 965 on Forevergreen to the intersection of Front Street. The school is now a house on the south side of Evergreen at the junction of the two streets. We could have photographed this one quite a while back, but waited until a nice day after the leaves fell so it would be seen better. The old pump still stands in the front yard, although the school building itself has undergone much modification. Address is 101 Evergreen.

Pilot #3, Colton School
Built 1913, closed 1947. Purchased early 1954 and remodeled into a home with several additions. It became a parsonage for the church across the street in 1968. Located on the NE corner of 230th St and H Ave (CR V52), about 1.5 miles south of I-80.
In this first photo, the original school is the back section with the two windows.
This view shows the additions on the south and east sides of the original building.
This is the north side of the building, showing a window added in the back.
Photographed 11/5/11
Lincoln #7, Riverside School
Built 1879. Closed for the 1949-1950 school year, then reopened for 1950-1951 school year before closing permanently. Based on two photos of the school while in service, we discovered that the front porch entry was a later addition in its life. From Millersburg, proceed north on CR V52 to 266th St, then turn west. Proceed west to CR V48 (G Ave/216th St) and turn south to 270th Street, and turn west. Proceed one mile to F Ave and the school is on the NE corner. Derelict. Construction along the road on the corner will probably end up with this school torn down soon.
Looking towards the front of the building, through a burned-out side window.
The original entrance door inside the porch.
