ORIGINS

I grew up in a small Ohio town and I rode the school bus from 1st through 12th grades. My bus ride always included a country road on which every school day we saw a one-room brick school house. (SW corner of Stine Rd and Enon-Xenia Pike). As the years went by I watched this wonderful, familiar friend fall apart. After I married the school really began to deteriorate. Every time we visited the area I would want to take a photo of the school but never did. Finally, when we went specifically for the task, the school was gone. It was a huge loss for me and, since that time, whenever we pass a one-room school it is a joy to stop to take a picture or two. Thus, our collection here and the blog with schools in other states. Shueyville High School, Shueyville

This one is a wee bit larger than a 1-room school; I think the ex-teacher who told me about it said it had two or three rooms.  It closed as the area high school in 1955, but was used for additional classroom space for many years before finally being turned into a community center.  Additions have been put on both sides of the original building, and the ex-teacher said it was also lengthened.

This school is located on the south side of County Route F12 (120th St.) on the west side of Shueyville.
Photographed on 8/14/11.

10/7/23: Barb Horak shared this photo on Facebook, taken when the school was active or shortly thereafter.

Penn #6, Green Bank

To find this school you must depart North Liberty on Dubuque St, southeast bound.  Dubuque St will then bend east, and just past Grace Community Church you will see North Liberty Rd.  Turn south on this road and .2 mile on the left will be the school, now a residence.  The school faces south.
Photographed on 8/12/11

This next photograph was taken on 10/31/14 so as to show the front of the building after most of the leaves have fallen.  There is no unobstructed view of the building without going on the property.

Clear Creek #3, Oak Hill, Tiffin

We photographed this school on 3/6/11 but weren't positive it was a school until today when it was positively identified by an old teacher.  This school is about 1.5 miles west of Tiffin on U.S. 6, and on the north side of the road.

Cedar Township #2, Sutliff

This school is now used as a community center.  Proceed north out of Solon on SR1 to 140th Street and then turn east.  Sutliff Road joins 140th from the south as you proceed eastbound, and when Sutliff turns north 140th continues on gravel eastbound - stay on Sutliff.  After the road turns back east you will see the Sutliff Cemetery on the north side of the road; the school is on the east side of the cemetery.  We photographed the school on 7/4/11.

Cedar Township #3, Maple Grove

Drive north of Solon on SR1 to 120th Street and turn east, proceeding for 1.9 miles to Taft Ave.  The school sits on the southeast corner, facing west.  The first photo was taken so as to view the north side of the building.  No windows are on this side:
This next shot is the south side taken from the SW corner of the building:
This is the front/west side and you can see the front door and single window.  Dense brush and trees on this side makes for difficult photography:
This last photo is of the back of the school, the east side.  You can see through the windows to the south side windows and through them.
Photos originally taken on 7/4/11, and retaken on 11/30/11 replacing the earlier shots.

UPDATE 11/12/19: This school was demolished in either 2018 or 2019.

Big Grove #2, Hazel Green

To find this school you must proceed north out of Solon on SR1 to 120th Street, and then turn west go 2.1 miles.  This school is on the north side of 120th.  As you can see, the front wall is missing and it is being used as a storage shed.  Photos taken 7/4/11

Update 2/7/15:  A photo of this school in operation can be found here:

Madison #1, Wray/Young, North Liberty, IA

We had seen this building many years earlier and thought it looked like it might have been a school.  The we watched as the owners modified it and put a couple additions on.  Still wondering, we had a friend who had lived in the area for decades and she said it was indeed a one-room school.  So in December 2007 we finally took a couple shots of it.  This house/school is one mile north of our house in North Liberty, on State Highway 965 (old US 218).
Update, 10/18/10.  This house is now for sale, and the flier says, "Unique Single Family Home Built From a Restored Schoolhouse."  As you can see in the above photos, it has an addition on both sides, plus it has a 3-car garage.  Description of the inside tells of some excellent work.  Price is "reduced" to $285,000!
More photos from 1/20/11 show more of the house overall
The following photo was taken from Hendershot Rd. on 6/15/16

Coralville, IA

We had seen this large structure many times - it is only about 15 minutes from our house.  We hadn't photographed it because it wasn't a one-room school - or so we thought.  On our anniversary in Aug. 2007 we took a tour and learned that the upper level was never used for classes, rather it was used as a gymnasium, for assemblies or dances, etc.  The school was built in 1876 on a land donated by the Ezekiel Clark family.

7th and 8th grade classes continued here after the lower grades were moved to the new school built begining Spring 1949. In 1951, with an addition to the new school, the 7th and 8th grades also moved there and this school became used as a warehouse for the city.

In 1974 the Johnson County Historical Society received a 50-year lease for restoration and use of the buildingas a historical museum, which opened 4 July 1983.

Big Grove #1, Stone Academy, Solon, IA

This is a school we passed many times before we decided we needed to take a photo in September 2005.  It is about three miles north of Solon, IA, on Iowa SR 1.  This stone school was built in 1842 and is used for field trips by local schools.  It closed in 1953.  Our original posted photo was taken with a 35mm photo, so on 3/16/11 we shot these with our digital camera.
In 1976 a tornado tore the roof off and destroyed the interior.  Restoration afterwards included fixing up the exterior walls and putting on a new roof, and then rebuilding the interior.
