ORIGINS

I grew up in a small Ohio town and I rode the school bus from 1st through 12th grades. My bus ride always included a country road on which every school day we saw a one-room brick school house. (SW corner of Stine Rd and Enon-Xenia Pike). As the years went by I watched this wonderful, familiar friend fall apart. After I married the school really began to deteriorate. Every time we visited the area I would want to take a photo of the school but never did. Finally, when we went specifically for the task, the school was gone. It was a huge loss for me and, since that time, whenever we pass a one-room school it is a joy to stop to take a picture or two. Thus, our collection here and the blog with schools in other states. UPDATE: The photos below were taken 1/6/23 so as to get a better view.

Clear Creek #1, Shay School

West of Coralville, on old U.S. 6.  From Highway 965/Coral Ridge Avenue, proceed west on Commerce Drive to its junction with Heartland Drive, and turn left (SSW), following the road onto the old US6 roadbed.  The school is on the south side of the road, last house prior to the intersection with the short drive connecting back to U.S. 6.  The school was moved about 200 feet west of its original location, and converted to a home.  The front faces west.

Washington #2, Oakland School

Proceed west of Frytown on County F62 to Derby Ave, and then turn north one mile and the school is on the NE corner.  Residence.  Except for the shot of the back of the school, the photos are taken looking at the south/front side.

Photographed 8/3/13

Washington #1, Brush School

The original location of this school was one mile north of Frytown on the east side Cosgrove Rd.  This road bends 90 degrees to the west (on 480th St) for .25 miles and then north again.  The school was moved around that corner and then north about 1/4 mile to a farm on the east side of the road and set back about 200 ft, and converted into a house.  First photos are looking at the west side/front of the house.

Washington #6, Lincoln School/West Lincoln School

From State Highway 1 and 520th St, proceed one mile west to Cosgrove Rd.  The school is on the SW corner, just south of a Mennonite Church on the corner.  It looks like it has been lifted to a new foundation.  Used as a Mennonite School.  The first photo is looking at the north side of the school.

Photographed 8/3/13

Washington Township, Center High School

This is NOT a 1-room school, but it is of the same time period, being built in 1926.  It is a high school, and looks like it had four rooms on the main floor, with a full basement.  Looking in the window I could see a normal water pump coming out of the floor on the north side of that lower level!
On 520th St, at the NE corner of Derby Ave, about .75 mile west of Angle Road. Directly across the street from Washington #5.  Now used by the Washington Township Optimist Club.
The first photo was taken looking at the west side of the building.  Notice in the last photo, of the north side of the building, there is a place where a third set of windows used to be.
Photographed 8/3/13

The following photos of the inside were taken on 10/11/14

Washington #5, Center School

On 520th Street, at the NW corner of Derby Ave, about .75 miles west of Angle Rd.  Used as a residence.  Directly east across the street is the 1926 Center High School.

The school is on the north sided of the road, about 150-200 ft east of Lackender Ave.  The east side of the building is covered with vines, and no windows are visible through it from the street.

Some work being done on the front when we shot this photo on 7/9/16:

Union #6, Dennison/Cole/Scrabble School

On Rohret Rd west of Iowa City, north side of the road, one mile west of Maier Ave.  Apparently the building has been used, but now in a virtual state of disintegration.

This first photo is of the east side.
This photo is of the north side, seen from NE of the building.
Seen from a bit of distance west of the school, looking at the west side.

Photographed 5/11/13

UPDATE 8/2/17:  This building was demolished by June 2017.

Pleasant Valley #?

This school was not on the 1912 school map, and looks to have been built about 1940.  Perhaps a replacement school for older ones (there were schools both one mile north and one mile south).

To reach this school, the town of Hills is a good place to start.  Proceed east on Highway F62 to highway W66, which is about 1.25 miles east of Hills city limits.  Turn south and proceed one mile to 540th St, and the school is on the NW corner.  Notice the pump on the south side of the school building.

The condition of the school is poor, and it may have been used as a home after closing.  Now the inside is completely trashed, being full of old appliances and furniture and other trash and garbage.

Photographed 4/27/13

UPDATE 8/2/17:  This school was demolished by 2017.

Scott Township #7, Franklin School

SE of Iowa City at 4405 Oasis Rd.  To locate from Iowa City, proceed southeast out of town on highway U.S. 6.  One mile east of the junction with American Legion Rd is Oasis Rd, which is unpaved.  Turn north on Oasis and proceed one mile; the school is on the west side of the road, just south of the junction with Osage St, which is only on the east side of Oasis.  A house stands on the site, and the north section of the house appears to have been the original school.

Newport #5, Rapid Creek/Old Brick School

From I-80 junction with State Hwy 1, proceed north about a mile on SR1 to Rapid Creek Road.  The school is NE of the intersection, set back from the highway.  Now a home.  The road used to pass on the north side of the school and can now be seen as a trace.

The first photo is taken from Highway 1, looking east, to show the lot with the garage.  Old trace passes on the left side of this photo.
This photo was taken from the same location, but zoomed up to show the west side of the building, which has been substantially modified, although most exterior modifications are on the east and south sides, hidden by trees and fencing.
This last photo was taken from a position slightly north of the previous ones, so the zoom lens could show the north side of the structure.
Photographed 4/6/12

The following photos taken on 2/14/15 when trees were more bare give a bit better view overall.  The first shot is the NW side.
This next photo shows the trace of the original road which was rerouted to the south side of the school.
