ReplyDeleteSaxe School in Harrison Township now stands at 1678 130th Avenue, Farmington. C-2 on the Lee county map.
It was originally located 1 mile south of Sharon Church. It closed in 1953. It was sold at auction and moved ½ to 1 block away.. Joe Haffner bought it.
Notes on Rural Schools:
1909 - 19 students - #2 - $10.08
(Ap) $10.20 (S) county school apportionment
1931-32 - 18 students - #2 $10.06
When this school consolidated, his mother had it moved to her own home property about 1/2 mile away where Joe lives now. He uses it for a machine shed.
It still has original siding and all windows & frames & doors. Joe's brother has the blackboard and the original book shelves are there. It now has a large overhead door in the backside, which faces south. The stone foundation and wood floor has all been replaced by cement now. It has a new corrugated tin roof. It is in great condition. He showed me the original doors and some things inside, like the library cabinet.
Joe Haffner attended school at Saxe there from 1st grade in 1949 to 3rd grade. His brothers and sisters went there too.
It has had a fire at some time, he saw when he took out the ceiling. His teacher in 1927 or 28 was Irene Shumaker. .
