ORIGINS

I grew up in a small Ohio town and I rode the school bus from 1st through 12th grades. My bus ride always included a country road on which every school day we saw a one-room brick school house. (SW corner of Stine Rd and Enon-Xenia Pike). As the years went by I watched this wonderful, familiar friend fall apart. After I married the school really began to deteriorate. Every time we visited the area I would want to take a photo of the school but never did. Finally, when we went specifically for the task, the school was gone. It was a huge loss for me and, since that time, whenever we pass a one-room school it is a joy to stop to take a picture or two. Thus, our collection here and the blog with schools in other states. Fairview #4, Fairview

Now used as a community center.

Fairview is just north of US151 on Iowa Highway 1.  Just as you come into town from the south, you can see this school off to your left.  Turn left on 99th Street and that street ends at the school - about a block's length.

Of course the building now has vinyl siding and other building improvements.  Compare this one to the community center in Amber and you can see the school building itself seems to be the same design.

Milo #7, Hopkinton

This school is in the town of Hopkinton, one block north of IA38.  It is on 4th St, next to a 1901 Presbyterian Church on the corner of College.  These buildings are part of a historical complex consisting mostly of the old Lenox College, and are across College St from the college.  The College operated from 1859 until 1944, and affiliated with the Presbyterian Church.

Milo School was built in August 1880, and was moved to this location from the James Worm Farm, two miles east of Ryan, IA.  Notice it also has the wooden flag pole.  Someone had recently broken one of the windows, and you can see the plywood covering while it awaits repair.

McGee School

This school was used from 1868 to 1952, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.  From Manchester, go west of town on Main St (210th St), which is old US20, to where 210th turns south at W69 and continue the short distance to W69 and turn north.  1.1 mile north of 210th is the intersection of Candle Rd-197th Street (name is different on each side of W69), and the school sits on the NE corner.

Notice that the flag pole is a wooden one extending off the roof at the front of the school, with the rope tied off down by the door.
Notice the two entry doors in the covered entry-way.
UPDATE 11/22/21: A new plaque has been placed at the school. Photo by Michael Day.

Pleasant Hill School

This school is located northeast of Manchester, IA on Honey Creek Road (D13).  On the north side of town where State Highway 13 and D13 separate, drive 3 miles and it will be on the left side of the road.  We couldn't find any information about when it was used.  Guess which wall had the blackboard.

UPDATE 11/22/21: Michael Day sent me this photo of an historical marker placed at the school since I photographed it.
