ORIGINS
I grew up in a small Ohio town and I rode the school bus from 1st through 12th grades. My bus ride always included a country road on which every school day we saw a one-room brick school house. (SW corner of Stine Rd and Enon-Xenia Pike). As the years went by I watched this wonderful, familiar friend fall apart. After I married the school really began to deteriorate. Every time we visited the area I would want to take a photo of the school but never did. Finally, when we went specifically for the task, the school was gone. It was a huge loss for me and, since that time, whenever we pass a one-room school it is a joy to stop to take a picture or two. Thus, our collection here and the blog with schools in other states. Amish School, Indiana Ave
Located .15 miles south of 150th St on Indiana Ave. Looks like it could have been an original school updated? On the 1930 aerial map it appears there is a school at this location. I'm seeking more information.

Summit School, Independence
About 1996 this school was moved from its original location nearby to the town of Rowley, and restored. In 2006 it was again relocated, this time to the Heartland Acres Agribition Center on the west side of Independence, where these photographs were taken. The school was built in 1869.
This photo was taken through the window on the left in the above shot.
Here's a shot from a side window.

Cono Christian School, Walker, IA
Photographed on 5/1/09. This school is preserved at the Cono Christian School a couple miles north of Walker, IA, on County Road W35.
On 5/7/25 we drove by this school again to get better photos. Also, I'm not sure it's with a Christian School: the sign says "Ridge Haven Cono Camp and Retreat Center."

Independence, IA
We had been up to Independence several times and had shopped in this store before we finally decided to take a shot of it in October 2005 - after verifying it was indeed a school! The store manager did not know where it came from, but she did say it was moved to its present location on old U.S.20 west of downtown.
