ORIGINS

I grew up in a small Ohio town and I rode the school bus from 1st through 12th grades. My bus ride always included a country road on which every school day we saw a one-room brick school house. (SW corner of Stine Rd and Enon-Xenia Pike). As the years went by I watched this wonderful, familiar friend fall apart. After I married the school really began to deteriorate. Every time we visited the area I would want to take a photo of the school but never did. Finally, when we went specifically for the task, the school was gone. It was a huge loss for me and, since that time, whenever we pass a one-room school it is a joy to stop to take a picture or two. Thus, our collection here and the blog with schools in other states. Madison #1, Wray/Young, North Liberty, IA

We had seen this building many years earlier and thought it looked like it might have been a school.  The we watched as the owners modified it and put a couple additions on.  Still wondering, we had a friend who had lived in the area for decades and she said it was indeed a one-room school.  So in December 2007 we finally took a couple shots of it.  This house/school is one mile north of our house in North Liberty, on State Highway 965 (old US 218).
Update, 10/18/10.  This house is now for sale, and the flier says, "Unique Single Family Home Built From a Restored Schoolhouse."  As you can see in the above photos, it has an addition on both sides, plus it has a 3-car garage.  Description of the inside tells of some excellent work.  Price is "reduced" to $285,000!
More photos from 1/20/11 show more of the house overall
The following photo was taken from Hendershot Rd. on 6/15/16

I live in this house and I am searching for pictures of the house when it was used as a one room school house.

You might try at the Johnson County historical people down in Coralville, next to the automobile museum. They have a lot of information about the schools. We keep trying to find time to get there ourselves!
